260. An Old Castle of the old brick factory ?

When road builders are making excavations it can arrive that some old ruins or buildings reappeared. I ask myself when I was making the picture on this link what was this building which looked as a roman or medieval castle. Somebody came on the french translation of this blog and said to me it is an old brick factory and not old. So if it is so and from the 19th century, well. Many factories where built in the 19th century in a middle-age style. But I do not know if it is not older. To have an old medieval or roman castle in Aulnoye-Aymeries, which is a town built in the two last centuries were not bad. Perharps... The stones of which the building is made seem to be very old and are however no bricks. Somebody put some medieval signs on it.
As I was making this photo I met a man going to the shop at the side of it. As I was asking to him what this building is, he answered to me the food reserve of the shop, not paying attention to the form of the building !
So, I think people have not the taste for old buidings. However what it is, I find this building very interesting and somewhat strange because it is not in the style or the rest of the town. I find this building has to stay and one has to search what it was before it was a brick factory.

259. Sign-boards near the cement bridge of Aulnoye-Aymeries

This picture shows to you the ways which you can take when going over the cement bridge of Aulnoye-Aymeries, where they are building a second bridge :
On the left you are riding to
- Landrecies,
- Leval,
- Maroilles,
- the tower of the Florentine in Aulnoye, an old tower which was in use for the railway.
On the right you are riding to
- Le Quesnoy (1), (2),
- the midtown,
- and the new college Del Marle which has replaced this one (we don't know if this building has also to desappear). I teached in the collège Picasso some of decades of years ago.
On the back (not on the picture) you are riding to Maubeuge and Bachant.
I published on this blog some photos of these towns.

At this place you could look a few weeks before on this houses and on this place with some bushes which were looking well in their autumn clothes, but now you are looking at a grey ground whereon they are building the new bridge over the railway. The old bridge was not enough wide. Finally they decided to build a second bridge near the first one. But they pulled down about twenty houses to build this bridge.
I took this photo from the street.

255. Horses at the Sarsbarras.

Here is a little place at the edge of the forest of Mormal, a little more in the North near Berlaimont. This place is called the Sarsbarras or in french Le Sarsbarras. It is one of the town district which are called in France, "hameaux". As I came to this crossroad, I must stop my car because these horses where just crossing the road on which I was (good purpose to make a photo, but the time I took my camera, there were already fare). It was hard then to drive at the side of the horses (they were becoming nervous), so that I waited that they went into a side path at the edge of the forest where they left the way I was riding to drive a little faster as in horse slowness.

Also in Hachette, near the crossroads with the train, there were there is a place where the trains stop, you can find this little tourist café. With a terrasse. There were there is only forest and a few houses the trein stop only two times a day. A good place for those who want to go to the forest with their bicycles. In this café you could eat also for years the Tarte au Maroilles, a salt cake with the cow-cheese of the region the Maroilles. This cheese is very fat and has a strong smell and taste. Nowadays in this old inn you can only drink but no more eat.

252. Crèmerie or Milk shop on wheels.

In Hachette a little village which is on the South-East Side of the forest as shown below, you can see a railway bareer passage with the old barreer-guard house (there lives a man who had to pull the barreers up and down, but now it is all automatic) and before it, I had the chance to see this car of a milk shop on wheels. With its funny drawing of a cow. The dark traces on the truck the shadow of a sapin.
I have forgotten to say the whole forest in on the territory of the village of Locquignol, which although a small village in the middle of the forest, is the largest village or town of the department Nord for its width and length of territory.

251. Some highlights in the South East of the Forest.

I photographed this map on the sign-board here or there. On the South-East of the Forest, the river Sambre is flowing next along the edge of it. And also the railway - it was not a long time ago 10 years ago, before the TGV (high speed train) goes through Lille- on an important line between Paris and Bruxelles.
The places drawn in red are some highlights of the forest. In the North-east of the picture, the Auberge du Croisil, one of the few inns you can find in the forest and where you can eat very good local cooking "s meals.
The little place drawn in red is the Carrefour de l'Ermitage. The roads are very straight in the forest and the important crossroads have often six or eight branches with foot paths and roads for cars.
In the west of the picture, you see a big red square. It is a place with two highlights, the Etang David or David's pool and the Arboretum of the Etang David, a big tree collection where you can see this (click on the word this.)

249. Gingko Biloba.

As germanist (one who studied german literature, language and history), I must say there are three emblem trees in Germany, the "Lindenbaum" on each place of a village, and sung by Schubert, the nut tree, sung by Schumann and the sapin sung at Christmas. But there is another ! And this one is in the forest of Mormal. The Gingko Biloba, sung by Goethe in his West-East Divan is to find in a few pieces in the Forest of Mormal. There are four or five of these trees which were planted in the tree park (arboretum) of the David's Pool.
Behind the Ginko Biloba which you are finding at the first sight you can see some trees which we do not find easily in the North of France, it is the Giant Sequoias. Like in California. But so old and tall they are not.

247. The biggest forest of the North in autumn clothes.

I have spoken often to you of the biggest forest of the North (I mean with the North the department of the "Nord" in France). I have said it lays in the West of Pont-sur-Sambre and at the East of Le Quesnoy a town from where I have already show to you some pictures. There are several "first times" this week, a photo of Avesnes, but not one of the bests, only the road, and now I'm showing to you for the first time the forest of Mormal. We went often to the South of this forest with the bicycle as we were young married, because we did live southly from Le Quesnoy, and we went often there as we lived during a long time in Berlaimont, at the East of the forest. Then, we could go to feet to the forest. But here it is not far, but there is no foot path but a road to go to the forest so that we do not go so often there. As we went to the forest so that I shot the photos, there were many roads which I didn't remember very well especially in the South part of the forest where I was not since one or two decades. This forest is big and there is no many leisure places. The biggest leisure activities are the hunt (but I do not like it), the riding of horses (but we are too old) and the walking (something for us). But you cannot walk during the hunt time so that the most part of the forest is closed for walkers in autumn and winter, and only a little part westly of it is good for walkers only on Saturdays and Sundays and on feast days. If you go to the rest of the forest, you have to stay on the main roads (car roads), if not you can be shoted not by a photograph, but by a hunter. There are many hunt accidents in France. You can see the parts of the forest which are closed or not at the bareers like the one you see here on the right which is opened. The sign board on the left is an information table with a map of the forest. The highlights of the forest are : several inns, this photo is made at the crossroad in front of the "Auberge du Croisil" or "Inn of the Croisil". There are also the inns of the" Coucou", of the "Godelot". The three are gastronomic restaurants. And the "Auberge du Roi du Bois", or "Inn of the King of the Wood", is a center for the study of nature, animals and birds. Two other highlights are the Etang David (David's Pool), a little pool which has some banks for picnic , and the Arboretum de l'Etang David (David's Pool tree park). This one are in the south of the forest and we went often here as we lives on the other side of the forest.
The forest has its main part planted with oaks. Some other trees are also here, but they disappeared as after the first world war the forest which was destroyed on 2/3 of its dimension, was planted again with oaks. The forest of Mormal is forêt domaniale, it means king's heritage, it was a hunt forest of the Kings of France, since the time of Louis XIV. During the Revolution the king's forests went to the State of France and were called "Forêts Domaniales", because they belonged in the past to the king's domain. Only a few very small parts at the edge of the forest have other proprietaries.

Another part of my every day road is when I'm crossing the town of Sains-du-Nord. It from the sides of this roads that I have photographed for you already some beautiful landscapes. The track on the right is for parking the cars, so that It's easy to take photos at the sides of the road.
One more time the road is empty, because I'm always waiting that the road is empty to make a photo (if it is possible) so that you can see better the landscape. Here is the main road which makes the junction between the road coming to the East of France and from the Ardennes to the Avesnois, going from the department of Aisne near Fourmies to the town of Le Quesnoy. This road is crossing also the Avesnois from the East to the West. Like you can see the road is here very straight, so that the Gendarmerie is often at the edge of the road to look at the people who are driving faster than 50 km/hours. In towns the speed limit is on 50km/hours in France.

245. Everyday road (1) : Through Avesnes-sur-Helpe.

My road goes every day through the town of Avesnes-sur-Helpe. I didn't publish photos of Avesnes-sur-Helpe until this day, although it is the capital town of the Avesnois and a town where I worked during 10 years at teacher in the main secundary school with also classes of superior teaching level. You can see here how the evening sky is getting rosa near the horizon. In a week or two at the same time (about 5 in the evening) it shall be dark. You can guess on the right side in the landscape the church tower of the old collegiale church of the 12th century.
Here at the side of one of the main roads (the road Nationale (national highway) 2 goes also through the town and cross with this one). The Nationale 2 is the old great road from Paris to Brussels. There are much trucks on it of all the countries of Europe, because the trucks have to pay a lot of money to ride on the motorways. On this picture you see nobody because I took it in the evening and I wait to do the photo, that there were no more trucks on it.

This picture was made on a side street leading to the car entrance of my college (secundary school where I teach). The college is built on a hill over the Helpe mineure which flows though Fourmies on the North edge of the valley. Trieux, the town district of Fourmies whose church one can see on the picture is also on the hills of the North edge on Fourmies. It is a worker's town district. In the town district of Trieux, there is another college. The electric wires are those of the railway which is passing near the college, so that like cows do also, we can look at the trains. The railway is here on the same high like the college and goes thereafter over a big bridge which pass the Helpe Valley (the Helpe Mineure is there in the underground of the town) and one of the largest street of the town.
