104. Rain and light.

At the end of the feast, we went to the kirmes to eat something in a kirmes-restaurant (It is a restaurant on wheels which follows the kirmesses : By us the kirmes is called "kermesse" or better and only in the North "ducasse", to go to the kirmes is in northern dialect : "aller al' ducasse". The whole day during the feast it didn't rain and the rain falled in great streams just after the feast was closed. But there were the kirmess or ducasse also after the feast and during the whole day , and after the feast the firework. I was not there for the firework, but I heard from the far (4km ago) a few shots and then I heard thunderstorm by us, and then again firework shots; so I meant there were thunderstorm in Pont-sur-Sambre and no more in Berlaimont where they done the firework and I don't know if a part of the firework was fallen in water.
I took this photo after eating in the wheel-restaurant though the glass of the window of it. It is not a reflection. You can see the rain-drops on the window and the kirmes behind the window. The photo was taken on the church square of Berlaimont.
In french : la ducasse de Berlaimont vue au travers de la fenêtre du restaurant ambulant après une grosse pluie. Vous pouvez voir les gouttes d'eau sur la vitre qui brouillent la vue.

103. The burning of the straw at the end of the spring feast.

At the end of the feast of the spring, the Bouzouc or feast of the dragon of Berlaimont (It's also the name of the feast), the Gilles burn straw on the roads or on the places of towns, this chase the winter away. But I must say it is not very warm here 6°C in the night and 11° at the day.
They said on the radio there is snow in the Vosges, 400km away in the mountains.
One can say there is snow at the same time in both hemispheres and the earth is becoming warmer !
If you are looking in the middle of the photo you can see the fire in the middle. People are dancing around. At the end of the feast, the ancient mayor said with a nostalgic voice :"Again a
Bouzouc is over !". With a Bouzouc it means the yearly feast of this year and that every year with each feast of Bouzouc people are growing older. Especially the old people are nostalgic when they know the the yearly town feast is over, because they don't know if they are always alive in the next year, but we wish all the old people of Berlaimont to can prepare and look at the Bouzouc next year.

102. The Gilles of La Louvière in Berlaimont.

Now is coming the end of the Carnival. On almost each carnival here the Gilles are coming and throw oranges on the people. It brings happiness to get an orange. In the past when the Gilles of Binche (Belgium) were created in the 15th century, oranges were very precious and rare here and were brought by the Spains to the Lowlands. The Gilles of Binche do not leave their town because they are the eldest. Pont-sur-Sambre (4km far of Berlaimont -the centrums- neihbours in the meadows) has also its Gilles (look in the Archives of April), but they were perharps in another town at the day of the Bouzouc, so that Berlaimont called the Gilles of La Louvière (also in Belgium), to do "the Brûlage des Bosses" at the end of the defile. Now the bad ghosts of the winter are also no more there in Berlaimont.
About the Bouzouc (the two messages below) : I read in a newspaper, the Bouzouc was built at first 1924 from Louis Debionne. His son Henri restored the Bouzouc after the second World War 1948, the Bouzouc was restored again 1995, the "Professor Henri" who lives always, was then 74 years old. His grandson Sébastien found 3 years ago a system to let the Bouzouc spy smoke (like on the message below). The Bouzouc has since 2000 a son Bouzoucky, which you can see a little behind the Bouzouc on the picture below.
The comitee Gilles de Chin organize each year the defile and the eldest members of the comitee are in the Order of the Bouzouc and bear a special cloth, so that they look like mayor and concellors of the middle-age.

Here another view of the "Bouzouc" of Berlaimont. He is now on the place with the Giant Gilles de Chin, who is an herold of the town. The Bouzouc let some smoke go out of his mouth and is shouting. But no fear : Gilles de Chin who hold the victory on the Bouzouc some ceturies ago is there. There are also two "Big Heads" (We name them "Grosses Têtes" in the back of the place).Perle de Rosée.

100. The Bouzouc.

What is the hundredth picture of my blog (it means more than three months here!), it is the BOUZOUC, a big, very big animal which sleeps the whole year in Berlaimont and awake one time a year, at the end of May. But don't be afraid ! I've put my hand in its mouth and it stayed save. Since Gilles de Chin held the victory on it in a very far past, the drageon is fair. It has certainly a relation to the church St Michel of Berlaimont (which has an onion tower), because St Michel killed the drageon. Gilles de Chin, herald of the town is also its giant.
If you are afraid of the BOUZOUC, look at my tamagoshi at the bottom of the blog (Duckie) , and give him love and to eat, so that I can stay alive also, when I'm not always there.

In this rainy landscape you can see a new kind of lamp in Féron with the church of Féron in the back. It is a church which had in the past two functions : church and defensive function. The people went in the church as the town was invaded. There are many churches like that also in the North of the departement Aisne a little southly. This one is near Fourmies.

95. The townhall of Fourmies : the day of Europe.

At the day of Europe the Comittee for the Sistership between Fourmies (France) and Bernburg (Germany) organized something for the children. They had to let go in the air about two hundred fifty baloons. In four times not to disturb the flight of airplanes. Before, children had to read in the microphone a text about each country of the European Union. The wind was very strong and the baloons went very quick and very high in the sky. Belgium is not far, but it is posssible that baloons went to other countries.
At the same time as the baloons were sent towards the sky was played the european hymn, the Ode at the Joy of Ludwig van Beethoven from the 9th Symphony of him.
At the frontipiesce of the french republic : Liberty (Freedom), Equality, Brotherhood. It is an heritage of the french revolution of 1789. In France it is written on each townhall-frontipiece.
Almost all the children who was there during the Day of Europe are learning german in the primary schools of Rourmies and its surrounding aera.

93. The answer.

Here is the answer at the question of the message before. It is the music-stand of Rocquignies near Fourmies. In the Avesnois-Thiérache we have several of these high music stands. They are very different of the music kiosks we can find in other towns. The big music kiosks are for concerts. These high stands are for dance. People did dance on the place of the village while the orchester was plying in the stand. So that the musicians could go on the high stand were put a ladder. But then during the dance, the dancers pulled the ladder away so that the musicians continue to play and doent go away. They gave to the musicians to drink.

Another question : What is the blue board we can see in the middle of the stand bar? At the day I made the photo, there were many people there for a concert in the church. In France classic concerts and especially choir concerts are often made in churches because they are acoustical good. During the pause between the two parts of the concerts and at the end of the concerts people want perharps to drink, so that they installed a drink stand. On the blue board which one can read from the other side is written "Buvette" with an arrow to show the direction of it.. A "buvette" is the place where people can buy to drink. and so refresh themselves.

91. Concert for Europe in Rocquignies.

.Another photo of the concert of Roquignies : Click here : 1.

    • Concert for Europe in Rocquignies.
    • Here is the photo of a concert given by the french-german choir of Paris (Chorale franco-allemande de Paris) in the church of Rocquignies, near Fourmies, not to confuse with Recquignies near Maubeuge (add on the 28/7 : Rocquignies is not far from Fourmies but in the department Aisne, but is at the border between the two departments).
    • On the picture you can see also the chief Bernard Lallemant, who is also president of the FAFA, Fédération des Associations Franco-Allemandes, it means in english, Federation of the french-german associations. The soprano soloist is japanese and named Shigeko Hata.
The concert was held for the Voice Festival of Rocquignies, a festival of four days with each day a concert, and was supported by the french-german association of Fourmies, Fourmies-Bernburg and the european town sistership association of Anor (Anor-Europe) which invited the choir for the festival. Bernard Lallemant is composer and the choir sang in the second part his Cantate pour la Paix (Cantate for Peace). At the end of the concert was sung the European Hymn : the Ode an die Freude (Ode to Joyce of the 9th Symphony of Beethoven.

This Chappell is almost in the center of the village of Gommegnies. Gommegnies is a big village with an old center, and all around country streets in the form of a star, with many houses at their side. So that, it extends its streets on several kms with house numbers over 1000 in each street, but between the houses you can always see the countryside. This chappel is not a column chappell because they are only on the east and north side of the forest, but you can see houw the roof has a pleasant form.

    82. Day of Europe.

To day was the day of Europe. In Fourmies were a great feast organized from the town sistership comitee Fourmies-Bernburg (France-Germany). It is the day of Europe because it is the anniversary of the declaration Schuman of the 9th May 1950 (one year for my birth) that we had to build an united Europa if we wanted no wars more. Now the great idea of Robert Schuman (not the composer, but the politician) is realized.
In Anor also there were something organized from the association Anor-Europe : an exhibition about Slovenia, a little mountain country southly of Austria, and ballons were sent in the sky by the children of the schools. Also in Fourmies about 200 children who learn german in the primary schools with 40 other childrens who learn english made a little spectacle where each child said "I am this land (name of the Land) , we are in the European Union and we have the Euro (or we haven't the Euro at this day)." And they sent blue and yellow ballons in the sky. The wind was from North-West to-day (and cold), and the ballons went very quick and very high to the South East. Perharps they belong to Germany, or Austria, of Slovenia, or Ungaria, or Romania.
On the photo you can see in the House of Europe above the map of Europe the portrait of Guy Hannecart, who was the foundator of the House of Europe of the Grande Thiérache (a region with a part of North (the Avesnois) and a part of North. This house is an association that is also a partner to the associations of sistership between towns of the different countries of Europa. It has also much to do with the european economic cooperation of the enterprises. And to send the students for practice of their job in other countries, to learn their jobs in other languages.
Guy Hannecart died three years ago.

    81. Milk storage in Gommegnies.

The elder woman you can see on this picture gave me many tips about things to photograph in Gommegnies. Gommegnies is in the West Avesnois, near Le Quesnoy on the other side of the Mormal Forest. On the picture you can see a tractor for some field work. On the right at the side of the street is a little river. It flows under the house. The elder woman said to me it is called the Rhonelle. This river flows until Valenciennes, a bigger town in the North West of here, in Valenciennes it flows in the Escault (in flamish Schelde). It is another river which flows to the North Sea after crossing Belgium. On this side of the forest we are also on an other river system as the Sambre.

Little mountain in Anor... the highest town of the North. The view is taken from the "Centre François Mitterand", a leisure center with several little buildings.

Every Thursday the dust-bins in Pont-sur-Sambre are made empty.

    77. (1) On top of the North.

In Anor is the highest point of the North. I have already showed the place. Here a shot with blue-red-yellow colours. A place for the cars of persons with reduced mobility, the hedge and the rooms for the meeting of the Associations of the Espace François Mitterand.

    76. The church of Eppe-Sauvage.

Near the blue lake of Val Joly which I showed you for a few days are several interesting villages like Liessies. Eppe-Sauvage and Moutiers-en-Fagne. This two last names sound very well. A "Fagne" is the same as in german "Venn", for example in the region of Belgium where people speak german near Eupen. The "Fagnes" or "Venn" are all around the Ardennes. And the Avesnois is something like the first hills of the Ardennes Mountains. A "Fagne" is a lonely landscape with grass and forests.

This church is the church of Eppe-Sauvage. Sauvage significates wild like the wilderness all around. It has a typical church-tower roof for the region. There are also church-tower roofs which look like bells like in Berlaimont of in Solre-le-Château.

All these small churches of the Avesnois are often from the 16th or 17th centuries.

    75. Mimosa or not ?

This plant grows in Pont-sur-Sambre. Some say to me it were mimosa. Others say, mimosa cannot grow here in the North, and it is no mimosa. But it has a good smell.. Also, really, I don't know what is this flower-plant. Can you help me ? Here in this garden, it is so old as the time at which the EDF (Electricité de France) City was built, 45 years old. The EDF Citys were built in the early sixties of the 20th century for the EDF workers, but as the elctricity production unity -the electricity was made out of coal- went close, some houses of the Citys were sold for a interesssant price. Many trees and plants of the EDF Citys are also planted at the beginning of the sixties. They were planted to held the earth because the earth was brought here to build the citys higher than the often overfloaded meadows. So that it is important to let the trees of the city and their roots grow to held the earth. So, what is this plant : Mimosa or not ?
