235. Reflection on the glasses of the feast room.

Here in Pont-sur-Sambre, near the town hall, we have a big room or hall where are holden town feasts like for exemple the feastes after the children camp in summer, or the feast after the school year, or the benefit concerts for the Telethon (a action to get money for the search against a sickness called in french "mucoviscidose"), or exhibitions like an handworker's exhibition in May.
The families can rent also the room for marriages feasts (after the official ceremony which is held in the town hall). It is there also that lives Jeanjean, because the room is high enough for him.

234. Flowers on a tree and tree on an iron wire.

It is an optical effect, but the tree seems just to be on the iron wire there were before the camera and the flowers are set on the tree. I find this way to use an old tree a pretty one, but I love trees so that I am deceived that this tree was cut. I took this photo in Aulnoye-Aymeries in the district of the railway-station at the edge of two streets.

I choose Sebourg as place for a few photo for you, because there, there is a very old church from which some parts are of the 12th century. And this although Sebourg is more in the Valenciennois as in the Avesnois. It is northly from Le Quesnoy and in the south-east of Valenciennes.

230. Autumn flowers.

Until this day and although it is almost November we had no freeze so that the flowers are always in their plenty blooming. I made this photo at the edge of the Avesnois in a place named Sebourg. Sebourg is is the Valenciennois but only a few kilometers from the border of the regional nature park Avesnois so that this little town is not very far from here. This stone decoration is at the edge of the monument to the dead soldiers of the wars of the 20th centuries which you can find in almost all the french towns and on the main place of villages.

229. Shall you go to St James of Compostella ?

This path along the Sambre is leading here towards the South and from there you go a long time along the Sambre in the direction of Berlaimont and Landrecies. Then you have to take fied paths to St Quentin. From there to Paris, I do not know, because there is no guide book. And then you can go on the Compostela way of Tours to Spain... Also if you not believe in God, this is an historic way. Nothing to do with the romn road which is passing more on the East. And the roman road to Lutèce (Paris) was going at the West side of the forest of Mormal which I have to photograph before the beautiful autumn leaves are all fallen. On the sign-board you can see the way is only for pedestrians. The fishers like to fish along this way.
I took also the photo in Aymeries, near the church.

228. Architecture of the sixties seventies in Aulnoye-Aymeries.

As I teached in the college Picasso of Aulnoye-Aymeries (now no more used and rebuit at another place under another name) I saw this houses every day. It was at the end of the seventies and beginning of the eighties. They look not already like North houses, but have with their white walls something from the South.

227. The bridge of Aymeries.

Another cement bridge, this time above the river Sambre, which many people here call the canal although it is a river made to a canal. In the past many ships with coal or some other charges went here on the river. The path along the Sambre was made to a walking way, it was in the past to pull the boat by horses. The path is together part of the walking path around the Avesnois-Thierache called GR de Pays Tour de la Thiérache. It is also part of the Sint James' Way to Compostelle, from Hélécine in Belgium to Spain going though St Quentin and Paris called "Chemin de Compostelle".
There are so many bridge here, that I could do a thematic blog about bridges !

226. Cow and church

I made the photo of this cow and church in Aymeries, one of the two old parts of Aulnoye-Aymeries. The church is small and is very old, from the XVth (15th) century. It is a church were one does sometimes a concert, for example for choir. I already made the direction of the choir Josquin des Près of Aulnoye-Aymeries in this church at the 8th of May in the early nineties. I directed at the place of the director of the choir who had a family event at this day.

225. An old wall in Aulnoye.

I do not know what exactly is this wall. I discover it behind a house they demolished to make the bridge of which I spook on other photos of this week. It looks like an old town-wall, but I never heard before of somewhat like this here. It is not far from the Roman Road which is coming from Bavay over Pont-sur-Sambre where the Roman road cross the river at the bridge of Pont-à-Pont and then a little further block on the railway to come out on the other side and leads to the road crossing of the Attoque which is not far from this wall. I find one have to do some archeological excavations to look if there is here no important ruins, tools or jewels in the ground. So, it is perhaps no Roman Wall, but I would like it were one... the counstruction looks also like the Vauban Rempart of Le Quesnoy which are of the XVIIth century, much later. As I looked at this wall, I saw the stones have no cement to let them hold together.
The Roman Road goes then following the road from the crossroad of the Attoque to St Rémy-Chaussée and goes then over to the road "NAtional 2" where it is perhaps the way to Lutèce (Lutecia = Paris) or to Reims.

224. The country-side in Aymeries.

Aulnoye-Aymeries is a town between railway and river. And behind the river and a few meadows is the forest of Mormal, on the west side of Aulnoye-Aymeries. Here is an early autumn view (the trees are for the main part still green) of the river Sambre which the Aulnésiens (inhabitants of Aulnoye) call the canal. The view is taken from the side of the town called Aymeries, the biggest and newest part of the town is called Aulnoye, and there are also the vieil Aulnoye, which is the old part of Aulnoye. In Aymeries there is an old little church of the 15th century and an some old farms which I show you later. And a cement bridge over the Sambre.

223. Christmas or secret night star staying over the street !

The star over the street is not especially a forgotten Chrsitmas star. Aulnoye-Aymeries had in August the festival of the Secret Nights. It is a festival with rock, blues, world music and folk-rock. I took this photo in october, but you can see how the stars which are together for the secret nights whose main part plays in the town district of the railway station and for the feasts at the end of the year and beginning of the other. The street here is leading from the railway bridge in my back left along the railway which is behind the trees on the left, to the place of the railway station.

Do not forget that you can click on the photos to see them better.

222. Danger to die !

Do not fear : It is written here on the sign- board "Danger to die". I took the photo from the bridge over the railway. But I took no risk to take the photo. I was on the foot path at the side of the bridgeNo fear : On the sign-board is writen "Danger to die" in cause of the electricity which is in the wires and took the photo at a place where there is no cement bar before me. It is the end of the passenger's railway station. I'm looking in the direction of Maubeuge and Brussels (the otherdirection is to Paris). It is the ancient railway Paris-Brussels-Amsterdam or Köln. Now the TGV has taken its place and do not go more over the railway station of Aulnoye-Aymeries, but here until 15 years ago, it was a very railway crossing. And it brought many industries to the country. Now it is a region with many workless people and went the Sambre-Avesnois is a region of during development.

221. Cement bridge and railway station.

The cement bridge of Aulnoye-Aymeries, over the railway. It is the one which was getting a brother at its side to let the cars ride more properly. You can see how old is the bridge at the color of the cement. I hope when they make a new bridge at its side, they shall paint it so that it looks like the new one. They cannot pull it down because the cars would have to do a very long way to go over the railway of to go though the level crossings "of Cayenne", where you can wait half an hour !

220. This houses are pulled down.

I photographed this houses at the right time. Because a few days later they were no more there. Here is already a lighning sign-board. I don't know if it is from my flash-light or from the sun which was going down. This houses which stayed on the left side of the bridge you can see below were pulled down to let place for the building of a second bridge over the railway. Place : Aulnoye-Aymeries, four kms from Pont-sur-Sambre away.

219. The cement bridge upon the railway.

This cement bridge is about four kms far from here. It stands in Aulnoye-Aymeries. Like you can see, it is not so large like the road, so that they decided to make a new bridge at the left side of this one to let go the cars which are riding in the other direction. I don't know exactly when was built the cement bridge over the railway (the only bridge in Aulnoye-Aymeries where you can drive or go over the railway). The other passage over the railway is a double level crossing where one must wait a very long time called the passages à niveau de Cayenne. Since the seventies I live in this region of the North, and they are still speaking to make a new bridge instead of the level crossings there too. However they are making here much new things : a new college, a new bridge, and so on... It is much for this little town of about 10 000 inhabitants.
I must say something about the houses on the left. At the time I write the blog, there are no more there... they were demolished a few days ago so that I have to take now the same photo without the houses !

217. Town scene in Bavay.

A town scene in Bavay, eight kilometers far from here. These are houses in the country style. You can see on the white house typical windows of the second stairs. Each aeral of the Avesnois has its style of under-the-roof windows, either half mond windows or round indows or this sort of windows which looks like church windows. On the left the houses have typical blue stones edges of windows includes in the red brick walls. The blue stones are becoming grey with the time.
So, I publish all my photos at a time at the end of the week, because I am to tired in the evening of week days to publish them. But if you wish, you can comment them all and not only the last one.

218. The old college Picasso in Aulnoye-Aymeries.

Here you can see the secundary school called collège in french where I teached between 1977 and 1982. A collège is a school for pupils in their early teens (from 11 until 15 years old). This college was at this time new, but it is now old because a few years ago the school autorities decided to build a new collège instead of the two old colleges of Aulnoye-Aymeries. So that this college which had the best buildings of the two ones is now without pupils or anything else in it. The other college Suzanne Lannoy went to an extension of the job school, so that it has always an use. They don't know what to do whith this one. They said it was a collège Pailleron (the name of a college which burnt in the seventies gave his name to a type of college building. But the collèges Pailleron had no bricks on the side walls like this one. I remember I had here a small class-room in which one could see on the side a brick wall. Now, this college stands here all alone surrounded by houses of the same building time and the climbing plants are climbing on it and the trees all around are growing very high. One of the sapins is perhaps a Christmas tree of us, because I brought one day my Christmas tree their for an action of planting trees.

216. The church St Pierre in Fourmies.

Among some of the eldest and beautifulest houses of Fourmies which has in contrary many houses of the industrial era, is built this new church St Pierre. At the time where there were on this place which is the place where 9 workers were killed from the armee by the demonsrations of the first May 1991, an event which is called in French "La Fusillade de Fourmies", when the armee shot on the crowd of the workers, there were another eldest church in red bricks. Here on this place was the town hall of this time. It is now the house of justice for work and problems between workers or employees and bosses, when a worker or an employee thinks to be the victim of an injustice of his boss. I speak of this event in another place of my blog.

214. Welcome to Bavay, the roman town.

This electronic sign-board which stays at the edge of the main place of Bavay, a town which is not far away from here, only 8 kilometers, wish the welcoming to people coming to the roman town of Bavay. The roman town of Bavay is called so, bacause there are there near the church roman ruins from the first century before Chr. until the fourth century after Chr. , there are the eldest roman ruins in the North of Europe. I think the Limes which was a wall around Roman Empire was not fare from here. The sign-board says a little more than it is : Welcome to Bavay, the first archeological site in the North of Europe. And Colonia Agripina (Köln) ? And Trier ?

210. The Pont-à-Pont

And now endly : the third bridge. At the entrance of Pont (or at the end of the town like here) going to Aulnoye-Aymeries, you have the main bridge of Pont-sur-Sambre (which means Bridge upon Sambre) , it is the Pont-à-Pont or bridge at Pont (-sur-Sambre).
However this bridge which is not a roman one, is the only on the roman way and it is to suppose there were here in the past a roman bridge or the people of the roman time went over the Sambre with boats. I think nobody asked himself the question until to-day.
A Jacob (James?) Way (Compostelle Way) was coming also here above the river. It is an old historic pilgrimage way to the town of Compostelle in Spain. It comes from Belgium near Brussel (Hélecine) and goes to St Quentin and Paris. Also was Pont-sur-Sambre in the past time an important place.
The bridge is typical for these cement bridges which were built in the twentieth centuries in the industrial era.
The other bridges of Pont-sur-Sambre :

209. Main road near the Pont-à-Pont

Here is a picture of the Main Road (grand-rue) of Pont-sur-Sambre. As I said two messages below this is the roman road from Bavay (in latin : Bagacum) to Reims (in latin : Remum) here in the direction of Bagacum (Bavay). The photo is taken near the Pont à Pont (Bridge of Bridge).
And near the chapell I showed already here and in front of the oil station.
You can see on the picture also a bus stop. It is a bus stop of the STIbus, which is a town bus company which as lines all along the french town constellation along the river Sambre.
The picture is taken at the same place as the left postcard of the sign-board in the last message of yesterday.
On the left of this picture you can see how the factory has changed its look in not a whole century. It is now part of the factory SAMP. The modern tower of the factory above the water cannot be seen on this photo. It would be more on the left.

On the right you can see that Pont-sur-Sambre had on the past a railway-station. It would be good that it could always exist because when there is snow I not would have to go to the next town, to Aulnoye-Aymeries to take the train.

207. To be roman or not to be roman.

I made the photo of this house which has perharps windows with walls in order to be put down. But in this roman town of Bavay, the architecture of this walls speaks to me, and I asked myself if these corinthian columns and the way as the roman style windows in the upper part of the house have their bows closed on the both edge by bricks are not of the old roman style from the time of the emperors. And so it would be bad if this house which is at the entrance of the town park had to be put down without to know from what time it is. The building way although made only of bricks when the basilika of the museum is made af blue stones and bricks (it cannot be sight here because it is not allowed to to photograph in the museum aera (here is the town garden and not the museum aera), so that I shall do a link on the museum.
Bavay is only 8km away from Pont-sur-Sambre and the roman road to Reims (Remus) leads though Bavay (link in the message before : the road of the town tower), and from there to Rom.
In the surrounding area there was also a roman aqueduc, the aqueduc of Floursies, which was like the aqueduc of the Pont-du-Gard. At some place we can still see part of them.
Probably if we look what is in the caves of the old houses of Bavay, we could have some surprises.

206. Town hall and town hall tower in Bavay.

Bavay is a town eight kilometers far away from here with many ruins from the time of Rom. Here is the town hall which was built a little later. The house on the left is from the Renaissance. the town tower is one of the three beautiful town-towers of the Avesnois. There are
- the town tower of Pont-sur-Sambre, which you know already good (photos 1, 2, 3 , 4, 5).
- the town tower of Le Quesnoy which you can see on this photo.
- and the town tower of Bavay which you see here.
In the North of France and in the Picardy, so well like in Belgium, you can see many town towers. About fifty of them in France and in Belgium are in the UNESCO world heritage, but not the three of the Avesnois which are the from the UNESCO forgotten town towers although they are between the eldest of all these of the North of France.
