Hello!

Church between two willows

On this picture you can see in the right sad weather the church of Pont-sur-Sambre, and the town district of Quartes (a part of it) between two willows. You can find the same place at the beginning of the blog (February 2006 in the Archives). But it was a photo with leaves on the trees (an elder one). The photo is taken from behind the Cité Notre-Dame.

Trees in autumn in Pont-sur-Sambre (3)

Before loosing their leaves, the trees of Pont are taking a their proud colours of autumn. It seems the trees are not red this year, but are taking some light yellow and light orange colours like here. The color of the leaves in autumn is according to the weather we had in summer and at the beginning of autumn, the fall of the leaves here happens from middle october to middle november for the last leaves. In gardens and towns there are also much evergreen trees but in the country-land and in forests the trees here are loosing their leaves, like oak trees and some others.

Like a tree in the town

There is a famous french song of Maxime Le Forestier whose title is "Comme un arbre dans la ville". It means "Lile a tree in the town...". This chestnut tree grew on the green place of Fourmies (the market place in front of the townhall) like a tree in the town and is in good health although getting autumn colours.

Roses in the summer garden

Here is a summer view on gardens of Pont-sur-Sambre, the view is taken in the Cité Notre-Dame and you can see alros the big trees which were planted in the sixties as the City was built. There are some rare species of trees there, rare for this country. Just in the first sight you can see a rose bush. Roses are especially beautiful in Juny and July.

3..... Early spring evening sky in Pont.

Trees behind the Cité Notre-Dame of Pont-sur-Sambre in the early spring. Around the houses which were the houses of the workers of the electricity factory they planted in the sixties many trees of many different species and among them are many exotic trees or some sort of evergreen trees of Cananda or other countries, for example or pines which didn't grow before in this country.

275. Trees and clouds.

On my every day road also, I stopped to take this photo, as we were crossing the forest of Trélon a little after Sains-du-Nord. It was in the morning and the trees in this early December are endly going to loose their leaves, what is late compared with other years. The early morning light in the clouds I found wonderful. In December the sun is rising up between 8 and 9, so that you can take the best photos of sunrise at this time.

249. Gingko Biloba.

As germanist (one who studied german literature, language and history), I must say there are three emblem trees in Germany, the "Lindenbaum" on each place of a village, and sung by Schubert, the nut tree, sung by Schumann and the sapin sung at Christmas. But there is another ! And this one is in the forest of Mormal. The Gingko Biloba, sung by Goethe in his West-East Divan is to find in a few pieces in the Forest of Mormal. There are four or five of these trees which were planted in the tree park (arboretum) of the David's Pool.
Behind the Ginko Biloba which you are finding at the first sight you can see some trees which we do not find easily in the North of France, it is the Giant Sequoias. Like in California. But so old and tall they are not.

247. The biggest forest of the North in autumn clothes.

I have spoken often to you of the biggest forest of the North (I mean with the North the department of the "Nord" in France). I have said it lays in the West of Pont-sur-Sambre and at the East of Le Quesnoy a town from where I have already show to you some pictures. There are several "first times" this week, a photo of Avesnes, but not one of the bests, only the road, and now I'm showing to you for the first time the forest of Mormal. We went often to the South of this forest with the bicycle as we were young married, because we did live southly from Le Quesnoy, and we went often there as we lived during a long time in Berlaimont, at the East of the forest. Then, we could go to feet to the forest. But here it is not far, but there is no foot path but a road to go to the forest so that we do not go so often there. As we went to the forest so that I shot the photos, there were many roads which I didn't remember very well especially in the South part of the forest where I was not since one or two decades. This forest is big and there is no many leisure places. The biggest leisure activities are the hunt (but I do not like it), the riding of horses (but we are too old) and the walking (something for us). But you cannot walk during the hunt time so that the most part of the forest is closed for walkers in autumn and winter, and only a little part westly of it is good for walkers only on Saturdays and Sundays and on feast days. If you go to the rest of the forest, you have to stay on the main roads (car roads), if not you can be shoted not by a photograph, but by a hunter. There are many hunt accidents in France. You can see the parts of the forest which are closed or not at the bareers like the one you see here on the right which is opened. The sign board on the left is an information table with a map of the forest. The highlights of the forest are : several inns, this photo is made at the crossroad in front of the "Auberge du Croisil" or "Inn of the Croisil". There are also the inns of the" Coucou", of the "Godelot". The three are gastronomic restaurants. And the "Auberge du Roi du Bois", or "Inn of the King of the Wood", is a center for the study of nature, animals and birds. Two other highlights are the Etang David (David's Pool), a little pool which has some banks for picnic , and the Arboretum de l'Etang David (David's Pool tree park). This one are in the south of the forest and we went often here as we lives on the other side of the forest.
The forest has its main part planted with oaks. Some other trees are also here, but they disappeared as after the first world war the forest which was destroyed on 2/3 of its dimension, was planted again with oaks. The forest of Mormal is forêt domaniale, it means king's heritage, it was a hunt forest of the Kings of France, since the time of Louis XIV. During the Revolution the king's forests went to the State of France and were called "Forêts Domaniales", because they belonged in the past to the king's domain. Only a few very small parts at the edge of the forest have other proprietaries.

234. Flowers on a tree and tree on an iron wire.

It is an optical effect, but the tree seems just to be on the iron wire there were before the camera and the flowers are set on the tree. I find this way to use an old tree a pretty one, but I love trees so that I am deceived that this tree was cut. I took this photo in Aulnoye-Aymeries in the district of the railway-station at the edge of two streets.

An early spring evening sky in Le Quesnoy (West Avesnois). The first green is coming on the trees in the early spring time. I took this photo not far from the Etang du Pont-Rouge (Red bridge lake).

The virtual travel of Perle de Rosée

From Lisbon I'm sailing with my virtual ship North, along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and there I'm finding Porto and the Daily Photographer Nino Gonçalves.

Then I have to sail in the other direction around Spain to come to Barcelona where I found two Daily Photographers : Rob and Carlos.

Update 2/11/07 : Bob's or Rob's (?) blog is no more there. I wonder how many City Daily Photo are no more doing their blog. I think it is hard to publish every day a picture, so like now there are long periods without photos in my blog, although I continued to photograph.

39. Early spring trees and column chapell.

Here in the Avesnois these column-chapells which are composed of a column of blue stones, with a hole for a statue are typical for this small region. The trees become not green in spite of the early spring because the winter was very long and cold.
I took this photo near the sluice and bridge of Pont-à-Pont.
Add on the 9th August : you can see the chapelle better, if you click on the picture, it is on the link.

35. Trees in the Cité Notre-Dame

The photo of to-day.The Cité Notre-Dame is the only place in Pont-sur-Sambre where the branches of the trees were cut on this way. They cut them in autumn, but now in spring I wonder how the buds could came out of what stay of the branches of this trees. It's the french way to cut the branches on the squares and streets. I do not think that it's the right place for the birds nests on this trees.

7. Church(es) and Shadows...

It is a second shadow play, but this time with the church of Pont-sur-Sambre. Suddenly I became four churches on the message, and I find it well so. I find it looks like in a film. Isn't nice ?
