Old brewery sign in Pont-sur-Sambre

This is the old brewery sign of the ancient brewery in Pont-sur-Sambre. I already published photos of it at the beginning of my blog, but here with my new camera you can see it better. I made this photo a few days ago.
Oh! I'd almost forget something : the answer for the question with the round light is this one : it is the clock of the church of Anor by night with a Christmas light all around.

259. Sign-boards near the cement bridge of Aulnoye-Aymeries

This picture shows to you the ways which you can take when going over the cement bridge of Aulnoye-Aymeries, where they are building a second bridge :
On the left you are riding to
- Landrecies,
- Leval,
- Maroilles,
- the tower of the Florentine in Aulnoye, an old tower which was in use for the railway.
On the right you are riding to
- Le Quesnoy (1), (2),
- the midtown,
- and the new college Del Marle which has replaced this one (we don't know if this building has also to desappear). I teached in the collège Picasso some of decades of years ago.
On the back (not on the picture) you are riding to Maubeuge and Bachant.
I published on this blog some photos of these towns.

251. Some highlights in the South East of the Forest.

I photographed this map on the sign-board here or there. On the South-East of the Forest, the river Sambre is flowing next along the edge of it. And also the railway - it was not a long time ago 10 years ago, before the TGV (high speed train) goes through Lille- on an important line between Paris and Bruxelles.
The places drawn in red are some highlights of the forest. In the North-east of the picture, the Auberge du Croisil, one of the few inns you can find in the forest and where you can eat very good local cooking "s meals.
The little place drawn in red is the Carrefour de l'Ermitage. The roads are very straight in the forest and the important crossroads have often six or eight branches with foot paths and roads for cars.
In the west of the picture, you see a big red square. It is a place with two highlights, the Etang David or David's pool and the Arboretum of the Etang David, a big tree collection where you can see this (click on the word this.)

250. The whole forest.

Another view of this sign-board where you can see a map of the whole forest of Mormal. Other view of the forest of Mormal in autumn can be seen in this archive of November 2006.
The bigger town on the East side (right side) of the forest is Aulnoye-Aymeries, with in the North of it, Pont-sur-Sambre.

248. How to find you way in the forest.

Here you can see a little nearer the map of the forest of Mormal. Such information boards are overall in the woud and I take this one near the entrance of the forest in Hachette, at the edge of the forest on which the Sambre flows and also the railway line Paris Brussels which you can see also on my pictures of Aulnoye I published two weeks ago. I shall show to you later some other photos of this forest especially of its highlights. This photo was made in the place named Hachette.

247. The biggest forest of the North in autumn clothes.

I have spoken often to you of the biggest forest of the North (I mean with the North the department of the "Nord" in France). I have said it lays in the West of Pont-sur-Sambre and at the East of Le Quesnoy a town from where I have already show to you some pictures. There are several "first times" this week, a photo of Avesnes, but not one of the bests, only the road, and now I'm showing to you for the first time the forest of Mormal. We went often to the South of this forest with the bicycle as we were young married, because we did live southly from Le Quesnoy, and we went often there as we lived during a long time in Berlaimont, at the East of the forest. Then, we could go to feet to the forest. But here it is not far, but there is no foot path but a road to go to the forest so that we do not go so often there. As we went to the forest so that I shot the photos, there were many roads which I didn't remember very well especially in the South part of the forest where I was not since one or two decades. This forest is big and there is no many leisure places. The biggest leisure activities are the hunt (but I do not like it), the riding of horses (but we are too old) and the walking (something for us). But you cannot walk during the hunt time so that the most part of the forest is closed for walkers in autumn and winter, and only a little part westly of it is good for walkers only on Saturdays and Sundays and on feast days. If you go to the rest of the forest, you have to stay on the main roads (car roads), if not you can be shoted not by a photograph, but by a hunter. There are many hunt accidents in France. You can see the parts of the forest which are closed or not at the bareers like the one you see here on the right which is opened. The sign board on the left is an information table with a map of the forest. The highlights of the forest are : several inns, this photo is made at the crossroad in front of the "Auberge du Croisil" or "Inn of the Croisil". There are also the inns of the" Coucou", of the "Godelot". The three are gastronomic restaurants. And the "Auberge du Roi du Bois", or "Inn of the King of the Wood", is a center for the study of nature, animals and birds. Two other highlights are the Etang David (David's Pool), a little pool which has some banks for picnic , and the Arboretum de l'Etang David (David's Pool tree park). This one are in the south of the forest and we went often here as we lives on the other side of the forest.
The forest has its main part planted with oaks. Some other trees are also here, but they disappeared as after the first world war the forest which was destroyed on 2/3 of its dimension, was planted again with oaks. The forest of Mormal is forêt domaniale, it means king's heritage, it was a hunt forest of the Kings of France, since the time of Louis XIV. During the Revolution the king's forests went to the State of France and were called "Forêts Domaniales", because they belonged in the past to the king's domain. Only a few very small parts at the edge of the forest have other proprietaries.

114. How far is it ?

This is a sign-board for the people who are coming from far away with their boats on the river. On it you can see all what they can do or have or buy in each town where there is a nautic base in the aera. And how far it is to the next nautic base. You can read here that there is a river harbour in Berlaimont. It is 4 km away (with the curves of the river), and on the other side in Boussières-sur-Sambre 10 km away (by road it is only four or five kms). There you can only drink a cup of coffee.
To-day I went to the department Aisne (Picardie) to hear a baroc music concert. Before I went home I made a project that I had since a few weeks. To look how many kms there is from the department North to the department Ardennes. The place where we went in the Aisne was only 11 kms away from the department Ardennes (Region Champagne-Ardennes). In this department you can find some mountains until 500 meters high (or 600?). To the border of the North to the border of the Ardennes there are only 27 km to drive through a little part of the Aisne. It is not very far. From the border between Aisnes and Ardennes (it means from the border from the North-East of Picadie to the border of the North-West of Champagne, to here in Pont-sur-Sambre, there are only 62km. Also is Pont-sur-Sambre is nearer to the overnext region Champagne-Ardennes) as to the capital of our region North-Pas de Calais !!!! Lille is 100 km in the North-East of here, and I think 85 km far from Fourmies and Anor, the towns which are the most in the South-East of the North.

112 (2) The map of Pont-sur-Sambre (on the sign-board).

This is a detail of a sign-board of the last post. You can see here how the town is in a curve of the Sambre. On this plan the North is in the corner above right. the great street on the left is the main road. You can see it also on the first page of the official site of Pont-sur-Sambre (not mine), on the left on the aeral view. This site is (or was) in my side-bar. In this street stands the tower. The parralel road is the street Notre-Dame. On the plan you can see how the church is far away from the middle of the town. It is near the river on the right.
a) We cannot see the part of the river below, it flows paralell to the border of the picture and it is part of the curve of the river. We cannot see the bridge of Bachant which is on this part of the river. The bridge on the left is the Pont à Pont (Bridge to bridge, pronounce the first -t as if it were before the a), and the one on the right is the bridge of Quartes (in french : Pont de Quartes).
b) All on the right on the other side of the river is another road. And there you can see the place of the electricity power factory.
c) At the top of the plan is the road of Bavay, on the left on the other side of the Pont-à-Pont is Aulnoye-Aymeries and on the right side of the picture is the direction of Maubeuge, below is the direction of Bachant. With the third bridge, the Bachant bridge, which we cannot see on this picture.

112. Tell me the town... Raconte-moi la Ville.

Tell me the town four times... I don't know why but this picture of a sign-board in Pont-sur-Sambre which stands near the Nautic Base came in four times although I tried only two times to send it.It is a sign-board of the river navy of France (voies navigables françaises) to explain the people which are coming out of their boats what is to do or to see in the town, where they can buy something to eat and drink and so on...Here you see how Pont-sur-Sambre is lying in a meander (curve) of the Sambre. On this picture you can see two of the three bridges, but one can see it better on the next picture.

110. The North.

I made a photograph of this sign-board in Pont-sur-Sambre. It is the other side of this I published in the third message of this blog. On this side of the sign-board you can see the whole department of North. It's in France along the border of Belgium. The Avesnois is in the green part of the map in the South-East. It is for this reason we say we are in the South of the North. I am born in the middle of the North, where is the main town, Lille (in one of its borough town). On this map it is the part in orange colour. In the North of the department is the North Sea, in the East Belgium, and in the West the other part of the region the Pas-de-Calais, which lies at two seas the North Sea and the Channel. In the South is the department Aisne which is in Picardie. On the green part you can see the big forest of Mormal which is the greatest forest of the region Nord-Pas de Calais. Pont-sur-Sambre is at the North-East edge of this forest. Gommegnies and Le Quesnoy from which I already published photos on this blog are in the West of the forest. Fourmies from which I already published photos here also is in the South-East corner of the green part.

26. Town library (again).

  • You may think in Pont-sur-Sambre there's only the town library, the mysterious tower (XVIIth century - these are latin numbers -we employ them only in history for the centuries and the names of queens and kings !) and the old church. But there are more ! Here is the town library in color, so that you can see the blue sign with its name : Del Marle. Del Marle is a painter of Pont-sur-Sambre (XXth century). It was a few years ago not a thing I knowed, but it begins since about three years to be a local famous man. His name was given last year to a middle secundary school in Aulnoye-Aymeries, one neighbour town. Here in the Sambre Valley towns and villages stand very near to another.
