126. The railway station of Aulnoye-Aymeries.

  • Here is the first time I send to you a picture of Aulnoye-Aymeries.
  • In Pont-sur-Sambre there were in the past a railway station, but it desappeared because the lines had not enough traffic.
  • To-day, here in the Sambre-Avesnois there are only two lines, one from Lille to Hirson, department Aisne, and one from Jeumont (Belgian Border) to Paris
  • All the small lines desappeared.
  • In Aulnoye-Aymeries is the junction between the two lines, but in the past time one could go further away with the two lines, from Paris to Moscow with the one, from London to Milano with the second (this second important line was also called Calais-Bâle). Aulnoye-Aymeries WAS also a BIG RAILWAY KNOT when the TGV to Brussel did not go over Lille, but went over Aulnoye-Aymeries.
  • If my husband and I, we decided 1978, then to settle near this town, it was at a time when we had no car and it was easy from here to go to Germany, with the Calais-Bâle to the South or South-West of Germany and with the Paris-Köln over Belgium or North-Rhineland.
  • Nowadays, when you want to travel to Basel, you have to take another train in Hirson (department Aisne) and when you want to go to Köln you must change of train in Lille and in Brussel, at this time, ten years ago, the trein to Köln was direct. The train to Germany and Brussel is more expansive, because you have to pay much money for
  • 1) the regional TER to Lille,
  • 2) the Eurostar from Lille to Brussels,
  • 3) the Thalys from Brussels to Köln.
  • Three trains when before you had to take only one !
  • And with the wait time it is much longer !
  • At the time when there were these direct lines and trains, it was much easier to go with pupils with the train to Germany.
  • I worked some time in Aulnoye-Aymeries between 1977 and 1982, and many parents of the children worked on the railway and had free tickets for the train so that the children did not have to pay the train for school travels.
  • In the college of Aulnoye-Aymeries where I teached the greatest employers of the parents were
  • 1) the railway (SNCF),
  • 2) the national electricity, with the workers of the electricity production factory of Pont-sur-Sambre (EDF),
  • 3) the mettalurgic work Vallourec of Aulnoye-Aymeries.
