Bird with tall legs at the Sambre

I do not know exactly what's the name of this bird in english (in french it is a héron), we saw at the edge of the Sambre two weeks ago, but it is very seldom to see such a bird here. Click on the picture to see it bigger and see good the bird.

Floods of the Sambre in Pont-sur-Sambre

Just before the freezing time came, they were some floods of the river Sambre like here, behind the Cité Notre-Dame, in Pont-sur-Sambre. You can see how the meadows were getting some water. Behind on the left you can see also the blue bridge or Pont de Quartes, the one near the church. It was no great floods, this little floods arrived often in autumn and winter. In the nineties we had one time a flood during two weeks where all three bridges of Pont-sur-Sambre and the one between Aulnoye and Berlaimont was under water, so that we had to ride to Maubeuge to get a dry bridge. And make forty kilometers.

The winter is coming

You can see on this photo, that the beautiful time of the middle of autumn is away. All the leaves or almost all the leaves are fallen and the trees are now very sad. This view is taken from the Cité Notre-Dame in Pont-sur-Sambre unto the river Sambre itself which you can see running alongf in the middle of the picture.

251. Some highlights in the South East of the Forest.

I photographed this map on the sign-board here or there. On the South-East of the Forest, the river Sambre is flowing next along the edge of it. And also the railway - it was not a long time ago 10 years ago, before the TGV (high speed train) goes through Lille- on an important line between Paris and Bruxelles.
The places drawn in red are some highlights of the forest. In the North-east of the picture, the Auberge du Croisil, one of the few inns you can find in the forest and where you can eat very good local cooking "s meals.
The little place drawn in red is the Carrefour de l'Ermitage. The roads are very straight in the forest and the important crossroads have often six or eight branches with foot paths and roads for cars.
In the west of the picture, you see a big red square. It is a place with two highlights, the Etang David or David's pool and the Arboretum of the Etang David, a big tree collection where you can see this (click on the word this.)

112. Tell me the town... Raconte-moi la Ville.

Tell me the town four times... I don't know why but this picture of a sign-board in Pont-sur-Sambre which stands near the Nautic Base came in four times although I tried only two times to send it.It is a sign-board of the river navy of France (voies navigables françaises) to explain the people which are coming out of their boats what is to do or to see in the town, where they can buy something to eat and drink and so on...Here you see how Pont-sur-Sambre is lying in a meander (curve) of the Sambre. On this picture you can see two of the three bridges, but one can see it better on the next picture.

34. The bridge of Bachant. Bachant's Bridge.

Here is another bridge of Pont-sur-Sambre, the second I let you see : It's called the Bridge of Bachant (Pont de Bachant) because it leads to this neighbour village. There are still ducks in the water, here a white one, and a coloured (a male and a female?) are swimming together.

33. Houses in reflection

In my town there are three bridges and the river makes a curve around the town so that there are water on three sides of the town. The name Pont-sur-Sambre means Bridge over the Sambre. I took this photo near the bridge of Quartes (the blue bridge on the left), the church Notre-Dame de Quartes is on the other side of the Sambre (in my back) (church, 1, 2).
The bridges of Pont-sur-Sambre are the bridge of Quartes (here), the bridge of Pont à Pont (the people give it the simple name of "Pont à Pont", this means "Bridge to Bridge", and the third one the Pont de Bachant. On the fourth side, on an affluent of the Sambre named the Sambrette, there is also a bridge called the "Pont sur la Sambrette" (or Bridge over the Sambrette). Here on the picture, when there's is an overfload, the bridge is saves but the streets and the houses which are lower than the bridge are overfloaded. The Sambrette and the road to Bavay and one of the two roads to Maubeuge, are the three ways on where you can get then out of the town, but the three bridges over the Sambre are then closed, so that you must ride 18 km before finding a street with a bridge over the Sambre which is high enough to go on the other side of the river with the car. But there are not often big overfloads (perhaps two times in ten years), but often some small meadows overfloads.

32. .The way between the meadows.

This way is going over the meadows which were overfloaded by the Sambre. The water of the Sambre and of the overfloads was frozen this last week-end. When the overfload is very big the way is no more to walk on, but you must take a boat to go on it.

30. The overfloading

Like I say it, we had at the beginning of the week a little overfload. This photo is taken in direction of the neighbour village Bachant, which is on the other side of the river Sambre. The overfload come from the river, but no house was undeer water. You can see also a hedge made of crossed trees and branches like we can see many in the country side.

20. The bridge of Quartes in the winter landscape.

This photo is taken from my home. My photo is looking towards the river Sambre and the Bridge of Quartes. You can make the photo bigger if you click with the little hand on this. Then you see the bridge with its blue paint.
To-day there is no more snow.
We had much snow this winter for the region. The winter is longer as in other years.

15. A lightneous sign-board.

Here is a special effect that I did'nt want to have, but I find it is not bad. I wanted to photograph the sign-board with the flash, because it was almost night, and the sign-board flashed towards me. This lightneous sign-board in the evening landscape is something very special, do you not find?
I took this photo near the bridge of Quartes at the sluice of Quartes in Pont-sur-Sambre.

9. Monsieur et Madame Canard - Mr and Mrs Duck - Herr und Frau Ente.

Mr and Mrs Duck are busy and quiet at the edge of the boat station of Pont-sur-Sambre. Maybe they have against flood and winds -that means against the near end that the medias promise them- have a long life.

5. La Base Nautique de Pont-sur-Sambre.

  • The boat station of Pont-sur-Sambre was created for almost ten years as the tourism on rivers was at its beginning. This year were added in Pont-sur-Sambre a few electric motor boats for the one-day-tourists. This photo was made in autumn 2005 and not in winter like now.
