172.Crossroad in Wallers-Trélon.

Wallers-Trélon in the East-Avesnois is the land of the Blue Stone. You can see here almost all the houses are made of this blue granite stone.

168. A bench at the Lakes of Fourmies.

This cement bench is near the beach of the Etangs des Moines in Fourmies, a little lake beach, you can see here. It is a little old, but the feet have a good shape in the old way, I find. A good place to sit on and look at the lake.

166. Table, trees and fisher.

This photo is taken at the entrance of Pont-sur-Sambre near the bridge of Quartes. The Sambre is a little dirty, but many fishers are fishing in it. I don't know if they eat the products of their fishing. The trees are near the small chapell and in front of the oil tanking station for cars and motorcycles (and trucks).

165. Wall paint in Fourmies.

A wall paint at the door of the backery "La Grange à Pains" in Fourmies. This beautiful paint with a scenery of the 19th century is at the entrance of the bakkery. I enjoy such paints. It looks like the ceramic kitchen table of my grandmother as I was a child. There were some country sceneries on it. I know it's "kitch". But I love "kitch".

163. House with blue stones (Wallers-Trélon)

This house of blue stone is in Wallers-Trélon, the village where the blue stone is extracted. the blue stone is granite. I explained it already in the post about the church of Wallers-Trélon. This village is in the East of Avesnois, about 35 km far from here. Not far from Belgium (the frontier is in the East of Wallers-Trélon), the frontier here is about 15 km in the North. However, the stone is not so blue like on my picture but blue-grey. I have worked on the colours on Microsoft Office Power Point 2003. Here (but I say it already thousand times, the land is called the blue country in cause of the colour of the old houses. But it is also the green country in cause of the colour of its meadows.

162. The oil station in Pont-sur-Sambre.

The oil shop of Pont-sur-Sambre is famous to have the less expansive prices of the whole region.

It is the same price or cheaper than in all the surrounding areal, so that many people come here to get oil for their cars.

Not far from this station is the Sambre.... and ducks. To-day looking at blogs I found this little Duckie. It is perhaps Duckie at the day of her birth !!??

161. Channel Story

To-day we were also at sea. In the North Country (Nord-Pas de Calais) also. But at the coast of the Channel, the sea beween England and France. The department Pas-de-Calais of our region Pas-de-Calais has its west coast on the Channel. The whole coast of the North-Pas de Calais, our region is called Côte d'Opale, of Opale Coast.

159. A column chapell in Pont-sur-Sambre

You have already this column chapell in winter on this picure, and in late summer on this other.
It is another summer view. It is at the entrance of Pont coming from Aulnoye-Aymeries. It is near the bridge of Quartes and near the factory S.A.M.P.

158. The coast of the works on the church.

On this sign- board ou can read how much cost the restoration works on the church of Wallers-Trélon (message of yesterday) .

The sign-board is surrounded by the plants and tress. On each line you can read who give the money, the village (commune), the state (état) , the counceel of the department (Conseil Général) and so on... The state and town give money to restore the church because it is an historic building. Almost all old churches in France are historic buildings.

Error : Read :The cost and not the coast.

157. The church of Wallers-Trélon.

This church stands in the village of the Blue Stone (Pierre Bleue), Wallers-Trélon, it is in the East of Avesnois, not far from the belgian border. This country is called "Fagne de Trélon". It is the land of the "Blue Stone" par excellence. In this village you can find the Artisanal Center of the Work on Blue Stone (Centre Artisanal de la Pierre Bleue). The Monts de Baives (220m) are not far and from the vilage you can see a quarry of Blue Stone (Blue Stone is granite) . This old church (I shall try to find from which century it is) like almost all the houses of the village is made of Blue Stone. The crosses of iron on the front part have no religious signification. They were sticked on the church-tower wall to avoid that the wall fall down. This year great works of restoration are made on the church wall and in the church. This village stands very far in the country-land and the landscape all around looks almost like mountain. This part of the country-land was called during a long time "La petite Suisse du Nord" or the little Swiss (or Switzerland) of the North. It has nothing to do with Swiss (Switzerland), except the landscape. Every country finds to itself a little Swiss.
I worked on this (new) picture with Microsoft Office Picture Manager to get this effect of a "Post-Card of the Sixties".

Here is a wall paint of another backery in Fourmies. You've already seen "Le four à bois", here is in the same street (The street St Louis), La grange à Pains (link below). There are many bakerys in Fourmies and I have still a lot to photograph ! Cafés and Bakeries are the most wide spread shops of France.

157. Trees are growing green

In the Cité Notre-Dame the trees are growing green and are getting a better tree shape, so that they look again like trees. On this picture taken at the edge of the Cité Notre-Dame you can see one of the longest street of Pont-sur-Sambre which is the street leading to the bridge of Bachant, Bachant is a neighbour village. This is a long strait road and to Bachant, I, Old Woman must walk half an hour to go from there to Bachant.

I've seen this garden door at the side of a garden in the Cité of Bel Air in Pont-sur-Sambre. I found it was beautiful in that early evening sky with the grass before it. The big white rays in the sky are made by the planes.

But last year happened several accidents here, so that they are making a new beach, and a new swimming place. On the sign-board is written "bathing forbidden" .
The Etangs des Moines are on the Helpe Mineure, which flows also through Fourmies. Look at the pictures : 1. 2. 3. where we see the Helpe at the other side of Fourmies.

154. The "Cité Bel-Air" in Pont-sur-Sambre

One person who lived in Pont-sur-Sambre in the Sixties asked me to post to my blog (the comment is on the french blog) a photo of "the Cité Bel-Air" where he had a friend who lived here (He lived also in Pont-sur-Sambre a few years during his childhoold). On this photo, you can see one range of houses in the Cité Bel Air and the church of Pont. This "Cité" is built in the high. It was built by the national electricity company of France called E.D.F. (Electricité de France) at the beginning of the Sixties. Now the electricity production Unity is on the way to be full put on the ground, while they shall build another which win electricity out gas. The ancient one won electricity out of coal.
Here also is the same building principe as the "coron". Here in Pont, they called these corons, cités (or citys) All the people of the same factory live in the same town district and have the same house (principe of equality), these houses were for workers and employees with family, the workers and employees which were alone lived in apartment houses called "Celibatorium". The engineers had more greater houses at the edge of a wood just next to the factory.
The "Cité Bel Air" is now called "Résidence Bel Air".
Here I explain what is a "coron" : 1.

153. The ancient electrity production unity (evening sky)

This is a picture of the ancient electricity production unity, the Centrale de Pont as we were giving to her the name. Here you can see the central unity where the workers worked, there were three very big cooling towers, but there are now put down (already since a few years) and it changed the aspect of the country, because during 40 years one could see these towers from all the surrounding areal. Now they work there to let fall what is now always here from the Centrale (the electricity was producted with the coal which came from the coal mines of the region between Valenciennes and Lens, but the coal mines were closed what brought a big economic recession in the country) . Now the electricity factory closed its doors and only the old people (the one which get a pension) under the workers stayed here. There are always old employees of Electricité de France who live in the "Cités". The other people like some of our sympathic neighbours went to Dunkerque or to Gravelines, where is the Atomic Electricity Production Unity. Here thy want to build a new Centrale Poweo, the electricity shall be made out of gas. The ecologists especially from the neighbour village Bachant protest again this work. It is the first time that in France an Electricity Centrale shall not be by made by Electricité de France but by a private firm.
The ecologist protest for this :
1) a too big consum of the earth water (so big like the whole consum of all the region Sambre-Avesnois), and we have already problems with the water in summer, when there is a dry weather like during one month in this year. The people must make water economy, so that all can get enough water and this industry will take more than what all the people of the region consums.
2)The second point is about a legionellose, a illness which made already die about twenty people of the region two years ago (in the cancient coal mines in the region of Lens). This work shall bring a warming of the air around it what brings a concentration of this microcospic living being and when the people get to much, they can get this desease which can bring death. This illness cannot touch the people which are under 40 years old. But I'm 55 years old and my husband 58 years old. We cannot buy another house because we are nearly in pension. So that we must stay here.
3) We do not know what industry has to do middle in a regional nature park. Pont-sur-Sambre is near the biggest forest of the North and in the middle of the park. The actually township was elected on an ecologic basis, against a fabric of burning of hydrocarbonats. Why did they accept this gas centrale which shall use fossile energy ? The next village Bachant is for an eolian park.
I too. And wind wheels are beautiful to look at, I find it is good for the rest of the eyes to look at them how they move their wheels. If Poweo want to stay here, it would be good they move to the building of good eolians wheels, not like the french ones which are very smart and sometimes fall down. Here.... we have much wind. Look at the sky on the pictures...

152. Industrial Past in Fourmies

I 've already spoken of the industrial past of Fourmies in other post like these ones : 1, 2.

Here you can see when looking at this houses of the industry era (end of the nineteenth of first half of the twentieth century) what was made for the workers. The workers lived in these "corons" -one speak often of the "corons" in the coal mine region, 40 until 100km northly or northwestly from here. The modern "corons" are now called "cités". This "coron" was built for the glas workers of the black glas factory, from which I speak in other articles. You can see when clicking on this photo to make it bigger, that the houses have beautiful ornamental details on their front part. In each house lived a worker family. Mostly they had in the nineteenth century no water and electricity, but they had water in the yard between the houses. In other towns like in Roubaix in the region of Lille, the yards around which were built the houses were smaller.

151. At the North Sea.

Yesterday and the day before, we were at see. At the North Sea, on the Coast named "Opale Coast", about 180 km far from here. You become soon a photo.

Update (10/8/06) - 13:50 (The promised Photo)
Here is a photo I made at sea. This is a view of the North Sea at the beginning of the East Pier of Dunkerque (the third greatest harbour of France). The coast from the Belgian coast to the department Somme, also all the North Sea Coast of France, and the coast of the department Pas-de-Calais is called Côte d'Opale (opale coast) in cause of its pastel colours. In the fact, the sky and the sea have not so bright blue colours in the North of France like in the South. Like I publish the photos now, there are the right colours.
The sea is far from the Avesnois where we live, but the national railway company SNCF organize days to one Euro. I made this photo at one day to one Euro per person, on August 6th.
On the photo these people whom I don't know are looking at the sea.
